Lapérouse has stood on the Quai des Grands-Augustins since 1766, which makes it one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in the world — and easily the most scandalous. It began as a wine merchant's, became a restaurant under Jules Lapérouse in the 1800s, and at one point was among the first restaurants ever awarded three Michelin stars. But the legend lives upstairs, in the salons privés — small wood-paneled rooms with locks on the inside, where 19th-century gentlemen entertained courtesans away from prying eyes. The antique mirrors are still scratched where the women tested whether their diamond gifts were real. There is rumored to be a secret tunnel to the Senate. It has been called, fondly, one of the addresses that made Paris the brothel of Europe. You don't come for a meal. You come for the ghosts.
We saw in a new year in one of the upstairs salons — the loveseat for two, the diamond-scratched mirrors, the lock on the inside of the door — and can confirm the privacy is the entire point. You can still smoke in them, which tells you everything about how little this place has changed.
Classic French, traditional, competently done. Be clear-eyed: at à la carte prices the food is not the reason to come, and most honest reviews say so. The weekday lunch is far better value. Order simply, drink well, and let the room do the work.
The miracle of Lapérouse is the preservation: enfilade salons, velvet walls, quilted mirrors, antique chandeliers, patinated woodwork. Nine private salons, each named for a courtesan, writer, or historical figure — the Salon des Sénateurs with its scratched mirrors, the Salon Gainsbourg where Serge supposedly met Jane Birkin. Stepping in is stepping into a frozen scene from the 19th century.
Lapérouse is theater, romance, and 250 years of beautiful misbehavior. Book a salon, order a bottle, and understand why this address has outlived everyone who ever scratched a mirror in it.
