The Delaunay is the grand Viennese café that London needed and Jeremy King provided — on Aldwych, operating in the register of the great early 20th-century cafés, with wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, strudel, and a room that has the proportions and confidence of somewhere that has always been there. It works at every hour: breakfast before a meeting, lunch before a matinée, late supper after a Covent Garden show.
King's other rooms (The Wolseley, which he has since left, Brasserie Zédel) have the same quality: an understanding that grand café culture is about the format and the atmosphere as much as the food, and that the food still needs to be right. At The Delaunay, it is. The bratwurst is the secret order.
