Andrew Wong holds two Michelin stars for the cooking on Wilton Road, and the achievement is the less interesting story. The more interesting one is the research: he traveled extensively through China studying regional cooking traditions far beyond the Cantonese-adjacent version that London knows, and the tasting menus at A. Wong draw from that archive in a way that has nothing to do with what anyone else in the city is doing.
The dim sum lunch is the most accessible version of the kitchen and one of the most exciting meals available in London. The evening tasting menus are among the most intellectually serious. The Victoria location has always seemed incongruous with the level of cooking — this is among the best restaurants in the city by any measure.
What We Loved
The dim sum at lunch are technically extraordinary — preparations and regional styles that don't appear elsewhere in London. The evening tasting menu is a serious commitment and worth it.
A relatively modest Victoria dining room that consistently underrepresents the kitchen behind it. The cooking is the argument; the room exists to deliver it.
