Simpson's in the Strand opened in 1828 as a chess club and became, over the following decades, the address for a particular style of grand British dining — roast beef carved tableside from the silver domed trolley, Dover sole, a room of dark wood and white linen that has hosted Dickens, Churchill, and every category of British figure worth knowing about. It has not tried to be contemporary. That is entirely the point.
For the classic British dining room experience, done in the place that invented it, done exactly as it has always been done, there is nowhere in London that does it better or more completely. The trolley arrives. The beef is carved. The room is as it was. That is enough.
