VENEZIA · TO DO & SEE

The City is a Museum

Treat it like one. These are the experiences worth building your days around.

Venice rewards the visitor who moves slowly and goes beyond Piazza San Marco. In December, the museums are uncrowded, the queues are short, and the experiences below are available without the performance of summer. Go slowly. The city is small enough to walk and large enough to get lost in. Both are the point.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection
DORSODURO · MUSEUM

One of the finest small museums in the world, on the Grand Canal. The terrace with Brancusi and Giacometti for company is worth the visit alone. The collection spans Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. In winter, almost to yourself. Book at guggenheim-venice.it.

Palazzo Fortuny
SAN MARCO · MUSEUM

The former home and studio of Mariano Fortuny, inventor of the Delphos gown. The palazzo feels untouched — his printing equipment, paintings, and collections still in place. One of the most atmospheric museum spaces in the city. Check opening hours before visiting.

SAN POLO · MARKET

The fish and produce market supplying Venice's restaurants since the 11th century. Go at 7am on a weekday when the restaurateurs are buying. The fish stalls alone are worth the early start. Open Tuesday through Saturday mornings — fish market closes by 11am.

Glassblowers in Murano
MURANO ISLAND · CRAFT

Take vaporetto Line 4.1 from Fondamente Nove — twenty minutes across the lagoon. The furnaces have been on Murano since 1291. Watch a master at one of the serious furnaces, not the tourist operations near the dock. Buy at Venini or Barovier & Toso. The best demonstrations happen in the morning. Go early.
