First Impressions

The hard-to-find seafood trattoria that rewards the search — famously no tourist menu, no pizza, no compromise. The fritto misto is the order.

Antiche Carampane is the Venice seafood trattoria that locals and in-the-know visitors guard — tucked away in the San Polo backstreets near Rialto, deliberately hard to find, and famously unbothered by tourists (its sign has long cheerfully warned "no pizza, no lasagna, no tourist menu"). What it does instead is impeccable Venetian seafood, fresh from the nearby Rialto market, in an unfussy, perpetually full room. Finding it is part of the pleasure; eating there is the reward.

What We Loved
THE KITCHEN

Venetian seafood at its best — the fritto misto is the signature and the order, the spaghetti with clams or the seafood pastas are reliably excellent, and the raw and grilled fish reflect the morning's Rialto catch. No tourist menu, by proud design.

THE ROOM

A small, lively, family-run trattoria hidden in the San Polo lanes — full of regulars, no frills, all substance.

WHAT TO ORDER

FRITTO MISTO · SPAGHETTI ALLE VONGOLE · WHATEVER'S FRESH FROM RIALTO

THE VIBE

Antiche Carampane rewards the traveler who does the work to find it — proper Venetian seafood with no concessions to the tourist trade. Get the fritto misto and consider yourself initiated.

Worth Knowing

Book ahead — reservations are essential on weekends and for prime dinner times.

Ask for a table in the main room and let the pasta and antipasti lead the order.
