First Impressions

Sancalisto, as the regulars call it, is the Trastevere bar that has somehow survived the neighborhood's full gentrification cycle with its integrity entirely intact. Cheap drinks, plastic chairs spilling into the piazza, an unselfconscious mix of locals, students, artists, and the occasional priest from the church next door.

There is no cocktail program. There is no design moment. There is a Campari soda for a few euros and a piazza to drink it in — which, in Rome, turns out to be the whole point.

What We Loved
WHAT IT IS

An old-school Roman neighborhood bar in Trastevere, on Piazza di San Calisto, open from morning until late. Coffee in the morning, beer and aperitivo all day, the chocolate gelato that has its own minor reputation.

THE EXPERIENCE

Worth Knowing

Go late afternoon for the best people-watching as the piazza fills up.

Cash is easiest.

Order the Campari soda or a beer — don't ask for a craft cocktail.

The chocolate gelato is worth a try.
