Cour des Vosges

Having stayed at Nolinski Venice, the Paris property was non-negotiable for us. It is worth knowing, however, that smaller hotel families do not always travel well — standards that feel effortless in one city can slip quietly across the border. The room itself is one of the most beautiful we have stayed in anywhere. The interior design is exceptional: the bones of the building show their age in exactly the right way, and the windows look directly onto the Place des Vosges. The location is irreplaceable.

The service is another matter. There is barely any staff. The same person who checks you in will also carry your bags, take your room service order, and attempt to act as concierge — and will not do any of it particularly well. When we needed help securing a restaurant reservation — the kind of task that defines whether a hotel is operating at its stated level — they were of no help at all. At €500 a night, this is not acceptable.

There is no lobby. No sitting room. No common space of any kind. You arrive, you go to your room, and that is all the hotel has to offer beyond the room itself. The room is magnificent. The hotel, as a hotel, is not. We cannot recommend it.

The service is another matter.

You enter through the arcades of the Place des Vosges — the oldest planned square in Paris, flanked by identical 17th-century pavilions. The arrival is quietly theatrical. What follows is less so: there is no lobby to speak of, no sitting area, no bar, no place to land before or after your room. You check in at a small desk and that is the extent of the hotel's common life.

The rooms are among the most beautiful we have stayed in — anywhere. The historic architecture is preserved rather than polished away: stone walls, proportions that predate any attempt at modernization, windows that look directly onto the Place. The interior design feels like it was made by someone who understood the building deeply and had the discipline not to fight it. Ask for a room facing the square.

The food program is the hotel's significant failure. The breakfast pastries — croissants, breads — were hard and stale, a serious gap for a property at this price point. This is not a quibble. Eat breakfast somewhere on or near the Place instead, which is not exactly a hardship: the Marais has excellent options within a two-minute walk.

Place des Vosges sits at the heart of the Marais, and from here Paris unfolds in every direction. Walk south to the Île Saint-Louis, east toward the Bastille, north through the galleries of the upper Marais. The Picasso Museum is a ten-minute walk. This is one of the best-located hotels in the city.

The room is as good as any in Paris. The address is irreplaceable. But a hotel at this price should offer more than a beautiful room — it should have staff who can help you, spaces where you can sit, and the infrastructure to support a stay. Cour des Vosges has none of that. We cannot recommend it.

3. 03The breakfast pastries were stale. Eat at a café on the Place instead — the options within two minutes are excellent.
4. 04The air conditioning was not strong enough for summer. Worth knowing if you are visiting in warm months.
5. 05The design is tasteful but not always functional. The single outlet beside the bed is occupied by the landline phone — to charge a device, you must first unplug it. The lighting controls are neither intuitive nor wired correctly.
6. 06The front desk cannot identify which room is calling when a guest phones down. A basic operational failure at this price point.
7. 07The room had not been recently reviewed for maintenance. Small issues that should have been caught before check-in.
8. 08The WiFi did not work reliably.
9. 09If you have an early departure, arrange checkout the evening before. The night manager is not authorised to process transactions, and there is no other staff on duty. We had a 5:00AM departure and could not be formally checked out.
