The Ned

The Ned opened in 2017 in a building that Soho House understood correctly: the former Midland Bank headquarters on Poultry, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1924, is one of the great commercial buildings of 20th-century London. Banking hall, marble columns, 87,000 square feet of a particular kind of Edwardian institutional authority. The transformation preserved what should be preserved: the columns are there, the hall is there, and eight restaurants now operate in the space where tellers once counted money.

The City location is the complication and the argument simultaneously. Financial London, not visitor London — on weekday mornings the streets around Bank are full of people with somewhere to be. On Saturday, the same streets are near-empty. The hotel works for both.

The entrance on Poultry presents the original Lutyens facade: stone, formal, proportioned for an institution. The banking hall, now the primary food and drink space, is the first reveal — marble columns, the original ceiling, a room that required the full resources of a major bank when it was built and still communicates that weight.

Eight restaurants operate in what was once a single enormous room. The layout works better than you might expect: each occupies a defined zone without fully separating from the whole. The evening energy in the banking hall is significant.

What they have instead is the proportional dignity of a 1924 Lutyens building — good ceiling heights, windows that operate correctly, materials that are actual materials.

The best rooms are the corner suites on the upper floors, where the City of London skyline is visible over the rooftops. Ned's Roof — the rooftop pool and bar — is the correct way to see the surrounding architecture. Reserve time there in advance.

The City of London is one of the most distinctive environments in the world: a square mile of financial and historical density, with Roman walls visible at street level and a skyline that ranges from Wren's churches to contemporary glass towers. The Bank of England is across the street. St. Paul's is a ten-minute walk.

On weekdays, the area moves at pace. On weekends, it becomes one of the more peaceful urban environments in central London. Borough Market is twenty minutes south on foot.
