The Langham

The Langham opened on Portland Place in 1865 as the first purpose-built grand hotel in London — which means every hotel that came after it was built in a world where The Langham had already defined what a London grand hotel could be. It operated continuously through both World Wars, through the BBC era (the corporation occupied the building through part of the 20th century), and through multiple renovations to arrive at its current state: a 380-room property that maintains the institutional quality of a 19th-century building while operating at contemporary standards.

Every grand hotel that came after The Langham — The Savoy, Claridge's, The Ritz, The Connaught — was built in a world where The Langham had already defined what the category could be.

The Artesian Bar, on the ground floor, was consistently ranked the best bar in the world through much of the 2010s. The Palm Court has the most established afternoon tea in London. Roka, the Japanese restaurant in the lower ground floor, has its own Michelin star and has been operating at The Langham since 2004.

Portland Place is one of the grandest streets in central London — 18th-century town planning at its most confident, with wide carriageway and neoclassical facades on both sides. The Langham sits at the southern end, presenting a facade that communicates its Victorian origins: brick and stone, a porte-cochère, the horizontal proportions of a building designed to fill a full block.

The lobby is the kind of grand hotel entrance that has no desire to surprise you: chandeliers, marble, floral arrangements, staff trained to receive guests in the manner of an institution that has been receiving them since 1865. It is exactly what it says it is, and this is the correct approach.

The current design updated the rooms to a contemporary standard while preserving the ceiling heights and proportions of the original Victorian floors. Request a room on Portland Place — the views down one of London's great streets compensate for any road noise, which is minimal on upper floors.

The Langham Club rooms come with access to the Club Lounge on the fifth floor — an additional social space with dedicated concierge service and food service throughout the day. For the business traveler, this is the right format.

The Artesian Bar is the drinking destination, and its reputation remains strong. The cocktail program is one of the most technically accomplished in London, changing seasonally.

The Palm Court is the afternoon tea choice for those who want historical context — this is the room where the tradition was effectively established in London. Roka occupies the lower ground floor and operates as a standalone Michelin-starred restaurant. A meal there stands independently of the hotel.

Portland Place connects Oxford Circus to Regent's Park, making The Langham's address one of the most efficiently located in London. Regent's Park is a fifteen-minute walk north. Oxford Street is five minutes south. Fitzrovia's independent restaurants extend east toward Charlotte Street.

The BBC Broadcasting House is immediately adjacent. Goodge Street and Great Portland Street tubes are each a five-minute walk.
