The VV Review

The Connaught is the quietest of Mayfair's great hotels and the most personally run. The building is a late Victorian mansion house — brick, gabled, unpretentious for its address — and the interior reflects a decision made long ago that the most effective form of luxury is the luxury of being recognized, remembered, and treated accordingly.

The Connaught Bar is consistently ranked among the best bars in the world. Jean-Georges restaurant has held two Michelin stars. The Aman Spa is the most serious wellness facility at any London hotel. And 121 rooms is small enough that the service operates as genuinely personal rather than systematically personalized. The difference is felt rather than described.

The Connaught Bar does not take reservations. Arrive when it opens at 5pm. It is worth the trip regardless of whether you are staying.
First Impressions

Carlos Place is a short, private-feeling Mayfair street, and The Connaught presents itself at the end of it in a manner that communicates private rather than institutional — a Mayfair mansion rather than a palace. The doormen on Carlos Place are the most consistently excellent in London.

The lobby operates at a quiet efficiency that reflects the hotel's philosophy: things happen at The Connaught, but not loudly. The flowers in the entrance are always correct. The first impression is of a place that has been running perfectly for a very long time and intends to continue.

The Rooms

121 rooms. The smallest standard doubles are compact — the right way to use The Connaught is in a suite, where the spaces have the proportions of a proper Mayfair house and the service operates with full precision.

The rooms in the original building are superior to those in the more recent extension. Specify when booking. The Connaught Suite, on the upper floors overlooking Carlos Place, is the benchmark for what a Mayfair hotel room should be.

Food & Drink

Jean-Georges Vongerichten's London restaurant operates at The Connaught and holds two Michelin stars. French-Asian influences applied with technical precision. Book well in advance — it fills.

The Connaught Bar is the primary reason to visit even without a room. Consistently among the best bars in the world: an extraordinary vermouth collection, bar staff who understand fermentation seriously, and a room that is exactly the right size. The Martini Trolley is the thing to order.

The Neighborhood

Carlos Place connects Mount Street to Grosvenor Square. Mount Street is the finest restaurant and shopping street in Mayfair — Scott's, the Connaught Bar itself. Grosvenor Square has the weight of its history.

Bond Street and its connecting streets are ten minutes on foot. Hyde Park is fifteen. The Connaught is Mayfair at its most authentic.

What We Loved
THE CONNAUGHT BAR

Consistently the best hotel bar in London. The Martini Trolley. The vermouth collection. Go even if you're not staying.

JEAN-GEORGES

Two Michelin stars in the dining room of a grand hotel. Book as far ahead as possible.

THE SERVICE

121 rooms means the personal service is actual rather than performed. Names remembered. Preferences noted.

THE AMAN SPA

The most serious wellness facility at any London hotel. Book treatments in advance.

THE SCALE

Small enough to feel private. Large enough to be a proper hotel. The right size.
